Pleased To Meet Me: SEXFACES

Introduce yourself, who are you? What band do you play in?

Sal: I’m Sal, I play in Sex Faces. I play guitar and sing.

Jacky: I'm Jack, I play drums and sing and do percussion and auxiliary other instruments.

Fiona: I’m Fiona, I play bass.

Hana: Hana, I play the electric viola.

What was a major influence on you as an artist / band?

Hana: John Cale. Warren Ellis.

Jacky: When I was a child, my mom was throwing me up and down and catching me, and then someone yelled, “Alice!” And she looked away, and I fell, and I hit my head. And ever since then, I've heard music.

Sal: I got into punk rock, and was listening to some records, and thought, they seem like they're having a good time. I want to have a good time, too, so I got a cheap guitar and tried to learn how to play it.

Describe a favourite album..

Hana: Isn’t this the same question?!

Sal: Is it?!

Jacky: What's the major influence? Money, lots of money!

Sal: Yeeeeah, there's tons of money in punk rock man, we just have to cash in.

What's a favorite book or film?

Jacky: (angry grumbling)

Sal: My favorite book is Slaughterhouse Five.

Jacky: My favorite book is Slaughterhouse Six.

Hana: My favorite book is Slaughterhouse Seven.

Fiona: Slaughterhouse Eight.

Sal: Assholes.

Do you prefer the recording process or performing live?

Fiona: Yeah, I didn't record with Sex Faces, but I also like both.

Jacky: I like the hang. I don't give a shit about the live or the recording, personally, I like the hang. The hang is my favorite bit.

Hana: Based!

Sal: For me, I like playing live way more than recording. I think that live, there's something about live performances that’s never the same, and so the energy is there. Sometimes it's fucked up.  Sometimes it sucks. Sometimes it's amazing, and you can never get that again.

What would be a dream collaboration?

Jacky: Musically, artistically, yeah, anything? It would really blow my mind, and it will be nice, because maybe I could take them on tour with me, I will ask... but if fucking... my cat, Liliput, could collab with me, dog, dude! I know. Like, as Americans, you guys are scared of, like inter-animal, sort of relations, right? But I'm just saying, think about it, if you can collaborate with your pet and then take them on tour and they're like, scratchin’ on something.

Hana: I’m all for relations!

Jacky: Thank you and it's—

Sal: Fucking furries over here!

Jacky: Love is love. It would be awesome.

Sal: I wanna... I wanna go with IDLES. They seem fun.

Hana: That's what I was gonna say.

Sal: They would blow us out of the water, but I’d be okay with it.

Jacky: I wouldn’t.

Fiona: I’m gonna go with Jackie's answer.

Jacky: Thank you!

Hana: Lilliput?! IDLESSSSS!

What's your favorite local haunt?

Sal: I love Showtime. But if you’re an asshole, don’t go there, it sucks.

What are some of your favorite aspects of being a musician in DC?

Jacky: Nobody recognizes me on the street.

Sal: I think DC has a cool history, but... we're not really part of it? Yeah, nah, I was reading Dance of Days last night, and I was, like, mad respect but dude, we are not like these guys at all.

Hana: We're not. They killed it.

If you weren't playing in your city here, where would you be?

Sal: I'd be in Atlanta because I like Southern boys.

Hana: Ooooooooo!

Jacky: This is a weird question. Is it saying, what other city would I play music in? No, I don't want to be anywhere else.

Hana: The South!

Any Sage advice for young musicians?

Hana: (growls loudly) Uh, never give up. Or quit now. Don't bother.

Fiona: Do what you want. Use your intuition.

Sal: Yeah, don't just try to be like everyone else. Just do what you feel like and be genuine about it.

Jacky: That said, you know the way you look at old photos of people on stage and they look amazing? Try that! Just try. Look amazing on stage. You’re on fucking stage, take your phone out of your pockets. Stop tucking in your t-shirts. Stop wearing mom jeans. Stop looking like a fucking knob and make a fucking effort, you fucking slobs! What the fuck are you doing? Why are you dressed like it’s 1992, it’s not!
