Pleased To Meet Me: SAMWOY
Introduce yourself... (Where are you from, what band do you play in etc..)
I am from Cumberland BC (Dodge City), but I’m currently living in Montreal. I play in my solo project SAMWOY, and I am ½ of the duo FHANG.
Why do you play music?
Over the years it has changed, but at this point in my life, it is my life force. It’s all I care about.
What was a major influence on you as an Artist/Band?
My brain injury. When I suffered this injury, it changed everything for me–I have been self actualizing through the pursuit of music ever since. Other than that, it would have to be all of my friends, who I am still working with to this day.
What’s a favourite book or film?
Princess Bride. This movie has lived rent free in my mind my entire life. I can remember watching it with my mom and aunt so many times throughout my childhood. There’s something about the relationship between the Grandfather and Grandson that has always seemed so nurturing to me. There’s something about watching a movie about someone having a sick day while im at home having a sick day that warms my heart.
Do you prefer the recording process or performing live?
I love them both for different reasons. I started my career behind the desk. I am grateful for all my years as a producer/engineer because it really helped shape the way I songwrite and look at performance as a whole. But there is nothing more fulfilling to me than playing on stage. It’s the only time I am truly calm and content–it feels like I am truly tapping into my life’s purpose and I wouldn't trade that for anything.
What would be a dream collaboration?
I would want to make a film with David Lynch 100%. RIP.
Describe a favourite album.
I am really into soundtracks, and one of my favourites of all time was the Akira soundtrack. I remember the first time I watched the film–I was so inspired by what I was hearing. It has been a constant inspiration ever since we met.
What's your favourite local haunt?
Cafe Bosco!
What's your strangest experience while performing live?
While I was playing at an outdoor concert in Austin, someone came up to me and my friend Gus and was like, “Yo man, check this out–you’re never going to believe it! Check this out.” Then, he pulled a cup filled with j*zz–the cup had a label with Elon Musk’s name on it. We stopped talking to him. Later, I went to set up my things on stage, and a random comedian wouldn't get off the stage–he just continuously made kangaroo jokes. This shit was crazy...
If I were pursuing anything other than music it would be…
Either making movies… or maybe still working at the Timber frame mill I used to work at, haha.
What are some of your favourite aspects of being a musician in (Montreal)?
The collaboration! This city is amazing for being able to collaborate with all of your favourite musicians. It feels like such a small village as far as the music scene is concerned, and everyone is down to help each other out!
If you weren’t playing music in (montreal) where would you be ?
I would be back home on Vancouver Island, I would imagine. Or the Yukon! I miss the mountains and trees!
Any sage advice for young musicians?
Don’t listen to your parents! Just keep going and work harder than anyone else you know.
