Telekrimen : Culto a lo Imbecile (Musica Para Loco / Slovenly)

The urban landscape of Mexico City has always birthed creative and politically minded outsiders, a sprawling metropolis rich in arts, culture and unrest. With unrest comes rock n’ roll.

Mexico City’s Telekrimen return June 28th with their first album in seven years titled Culto a lo Imbecile out on Musica Para Loco/ Slovenly. It seems the kinetic musical energies stored up during the band’s seven year hiatus has manifested itself into eight tracks of pure garage adrenaline, dipped in fuzz and washed out in the surf. Fernando, Omar , Edwin, Daniel and Alfredo have bottled an impressive collection of nuggets here, that run a serious risk of bringing the walls down.

Ni Esperanza, Ni Futuro tears through the gates with cinder block riffs buoyed by floaty organ, if your going to tear the place apart , you might as well dance. Richman Holocausto pairs grinding riffs with sinister organ swirls, the songs plays out like a tornado, menacing in it’s dizzying movement. Somos los -Banderas Negras- Nacidos para Perder delivers some groovy organ licks, the Byrds-ian guitar work centered between the necessary stomp and growl provides one of the albums many raucous highlights. Shades of Bo-Diddley can be heard in El Ultimo Dia, a nod that shows Telekrimen displaying combustible musicianship, endless energy and tight musical synergy, it can’t help but manifest visions of how incredible their live performance must be. There is plenty of sinister swagger and left field turns all over the seven minute plus Jeremias, corkscrewing it’s way down the rabbit hole, giving this album it’s freak beat anchor. Magia Negra and title track Culto a los Imbecile serves as a nice gear shift in the form of two instrumentals. Magia Negra is awash in turquoise waves, guitars jittering in the push and pull of the rhythm section, the organ swirling in the salt breeze. Culto a los Imbecile brings the party from the surf to the sand with an absolutely killer hip shaker that’s nothing short of perfect. It exemplifies the melodies and hooks drenched within the reverb and crunch that lie at the base of Culto a lo Imbecile. Just in time for summer, look no further for your summer soundtrack, like the restorative properties of the ocean let this album wash over you again and again.
