Pleased To Meet Me:Bad waitress

Introduce Yourself…

KM: I’m Katelyn Molgard and I play in Bad Waitress!

Why do you play music?

KM: Music seems like the most natural way to express my humanity. It fills the gaps between words and helps you feel colours that can’t be painted.

What was a major influence on you as an Artist/Band?

KM: As a band Bad Waitress has always been inspired by artists that travel a different path. The ones that think outside the boundaries of the music industry and create for the sake of creation.

What’s a favourite book or film?

KM: My favourite films are always ones that enter the realm of phantasmagoria. I’ve always been fixated on Carnival of Souls (1962) for that exact reason. Imagine waking up and you’re trapped in this strange and lonely existence between the living and the dead. Shiversss. I don’t know if this is my favourite book but the one I’ve read more times than I can count is The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury.

Do you prefer the recording process or performing live?

KM: Performing live is what it’s all about. That being said, I love being in the studio and zeroing in on every tiny detail. You get to play scientist and discover new aspects to your music.

What would be a dream collaboration?

KM: Roy Orbison

Describe a favourite album.

KM: One of my favourite albums of all time is Teenage Snuff Film by Rowland S. Howard.

What's your favourite local haunt?

KM: Besides my room, Houndstooth!!! It’s a bar, music venue, jam space, and overall incredible little Petrie dish for musicians, filmmakers and broke ass nerds! And I work there so I get to see it all in motion. It’s very inspiring.

What's your strangest experience while performing live?

KM: Strange good: a giant moth flying into my armpit while playing River & Sky a number of years back. It tickled me and made me mess up because I was laughing so much. Strange bad: having a guy throw a whole pint of beer in my face in Pittsburgh.

If I were pursuing anything other than music it would be…

KM: I’ve dabbled in many different fields. Currently I’m studying electrolysis to provide gender affirming care. Music will always be at the forefront though. It just feels natural.

What are some of your favourite aspects of being a musician in Toronto?

KM: There is never a lack of anything. We constantly have shows every night of the week. People are always pumping out new things and interesting things. There is inspiration everywhere.

If you weren’t playing music in Toronto where would you be ?

KM: On a picnic!

Any sage advice for young musicians?

KM: Show up. Wrench yourself off your phone and out of bed. Collaborate with people. Try to be present and positive. It’s infectious. Your voice is unique. Savour each thing and be true to yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others. Music isn’t a sport. Relish your experiences and be kind.
